52 historic buildings on 54 hectares; a horse-drawn tram still runs along 516 metres of track.
Visitors walk among 52 original or reconstructed buildings from the Meiji, Taishō and early Shōwa periods (1868 to 1945), gathered on 54 hectares inside Nopporo Forest Park. A horse-drawn tram runs along 516.58 metres of narrow-gauge track, and among the buildings is the former Sapporo railway station of 1908, now an Important Cultural Property.
Opened in 1983, the village brings together in one place buildings that would otherwise be scattered or lost across the rest of Hokkaido, to show how people lived in the decades when the island was colonised. It is the open-air museum with the largest number of authentic historic buildings in Hokkaido.
ℹ️ In summer the horse-drawn tram runs; at weekends in winter it is replaced by a horse-drawn sleigh.
