A wholesale market since 1910: selling starts at four in the morning, then it is time for breakfast.
Its roots go back to a fruit and vegetable market of 1886 near the Meiji Bridge; in 1910 nine Nagoya businessmen founded the joint-stock company that gave the market its present form, with the backing of the prefectural governor and the city mayor. More than a hundred wholesalers sell fish, meat, vegetables and flowers from the early hours of the morning, and the restaurants around it stay open from before dawn until mid-morning.
It is known as ‘Nagoya's kitchen’: five minutes from the station, it is still the place where the city's cooks have always done their buying, and if you arrive early you can have breakfast among crates of freshly unloaded fish.
ℹ️ The wholesale market operates from the early hours of the morning until about 10:00; the hours of individual shops and restaurants vary. Closed on Sundays, public holidays and one Wednesday a month (irregular).
