The 1890 building started out as a sugar refinery: beer only arrived in 1903.
The museum occupies a brick building from 1890, which for thirteen years was a sugar refinery before Sapporo Beer took it over in 1903 as a malting plant. It opened as a museum in 1987, after a first version from as early as 1966, and it is the only museum in Japan entirely devoted to beer.
It is in Sapporo's Higashi Ward, where the company has brewed beer since 1903. The building and the copper kettle used in historical brewing are recognised as Hokkaido Heritage (北海道遺産), a regional register for assets considered representative of the island's history; the kettle is also classified as an important item in the history of science and technology.
