Wax in cold water becomes fake tempura in 30–50 minutes: the Japanese art of sampuru.
In a period house in the Hashimoto-chō district, the workshop lets you try the technique of sanpuru (the fake display food invented in Japan) by pouring coloured wax into cold water to create three pieces of tempura in 30–50 minutes. Since 2022 the building has also been a retro gallery devoted to this art, the only one of its kind in Japan.
Workshop and exhibition devoted to the Japanese art of fake food for shop-window displays (食品サンプル), with hands-on classes for visitors in the historic centre of Gujo Hachiman.
ℹ️ Open 10:00–17:00, closed on Wednesdays. Tempura experience about 1,200 yen per person, 30–50 minutes; booking by phone recommended (0575-67-1870), also possible on the day at weekends and in summer.
