The only double-deck bridge on the Shimanami Kaidō: cars on top, bicycles and pedestrians below.

The bridge, 50 metres above the sea, lets about 400 large ships through every day. It is the only double-deck bridge on the Shimanami Kaidō: on top, 14 metres wide, the cars; below, inside the truss structure, a path of about 4 metres for motorbikes, bicycles and pedestrians.

The first of the seven bridges of the Shimanami Kaidō on the Hiroshima side, between the islands of Mukaishima and Innoshima, both in the municipality of Onomichi. Opened to traffic on 4 December 1983, with a total span of 1,270 metres (770 for the central span), it was Japan's first cable-stayed bridge with a steel deck and the first in the world to use strands of 127 wires. In 2014 CNN included the Shimanami Kaidō, which continues from here over another six bridges to Imabari, in Ehime, among the seven great cycle routes of the world.

ℹ️ The viewing park at the foot of the bridge, on the Innoshima side, is always open and free. Crossing on foot is always free; for bicycles and mopeds the nominal toll of 50 yen is suspended under the ‘Shimanami Cycling Free’ campaign. Check the status when you cross: the suspension is not stated to be permanent.
